Over 300K Sign Petition, Says Alberta Separatist Group

A separatist group in Alberta has garnered significant attention, collecting over 300,000 signatures for a petition advocating for a referendum on the province’s separation from Canada. The Stay Free Alberta group announced that they have officially gathered 301,620 signatures, exceeding the required 178,000 necessary to prompt the government to consider a separation question on an upcoming ballot.
Milestone Celebration and Political Pressure
On Monday, members of Stay Free Alberta celebrated this milestone at Elections Alberta, where they delivered their petition. Supporters waved Alberta flags and expressed their desire for the provincial government to heed the growing call for a referendum.
Mitch Sylvestre’s Statement
Mitch Sylvestre, the spokesperson for Stay Free Alberta, emphasized the significance of the signatures. He stated, “This process shows that Albertans are engaged, and this is an issue people want to have a say on.” Sylvestre also addressed Premier Danielle Smith in a letter, urging her government to acknowledge the democratic will represented in the petition.
Signature Verification Process
Despite the support, the verification of signatures has faced delays. A court injunction is currently halting this process as a judge reviews a legal challenge from an Alberta First Nations group. They argue that the petition may infringe on treaty rights.
Jeff Rath, the lawyer for Stay Free Alberta, asserts that regardless of court proceedings, the substantial number of signatures should compel political action. He stated, “As far as we’re concerned, whatever the court does is meaningless.”
Comparative Petition Numbers
In December, a pro-unity petition titled ‘Forever Canadian’ successfully verified 404,293 signatures, advocating for Alberta to officially remain part of Canada. This context highlights the divided sentiments within the province regarding its future.
Concerns Over Data Integrity
The signing of the petition has raised allegations of a potential data breach involving the personal information of Albertans. An expert has cautioned that the integrity of the voter list could be compromised, leading to doubts about the legitimacy of some signatures.
Rath affirmed the transparency of Stay Free Alberta’s signature collection process, stating, “Every one of our canvassers was badged and numbered. Every person signing the petition had ID.”
Moving Forward
Once the process resumes, Elections Alberta will ensure that each signature is valid, that witnesses were present, and conduct a random sampling to verify information. They will also search for any possible fraudulent entries that may have been included in the collected signatures.
