Calgary Father Charged with Children’s Murder Appears in Court

A Calgary father faces serious charges after the alleged murder of his two young children. The children, ages three and five, were found deceased in the back seat of a vehicle, which the father drove to a police station.

Court Appearance of Accused Calgary Father

The accused, identified by the initials MM, made a brief appearance in court today. He is currently held at the Calgary Remand Centre. During the arraignment, MM wore a blue jail-issued jumpsuit and only acknowledged he understood the proceedings.

Details of the Incident

MM has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. According to court documents, the murders are believed to have occurred on April 29, 2023, the day before the bodies were discovered on April 30.

  • Children picked up by MM at around 5 p.m. on April 29.
  • Children’s mother contacted police after he failed to return them.
  • MM arrived at the District 3 police station the next day and confessed via 911.

The police found MM shortly after he made the confession and located the vehicle on 14th Street at 45th Avenue N.W. The investigation revealed that the bodies of the children were in the back seat of the car.

Background on the Family

Prior to this tragic event, MM and the children’s mother were in a common-law relationship for six years. They separated last year but had maintained joint custody of the children. Despite previous incidents requiring police intervention at their home, no charges had ever been filed against MM.

The case is currently on hold for one month while the defence attorney, Clayton Rice, reviews the disclosure documents related to the charges. Until then, MM will remain in custody.
