Leafs GM Chayka Praises Berube as ‘Tremendous’ Coach

In a recent introductory news conference, John Chayka, the new general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, spoke highly of head coach Craig Berube. Chayka characterized Berube as a “tremendous coach” during the May 4, 2026, event.

Chayka’s Assessment of Berube

Chayka met with Berube shortly after his hiring. He expressed confidence in Berube’s coaching abilities, citing his experience as a Stanley Cup-winning coach. Chayka emphasized Berube’s positive character, stating, “I think he’s a tremendous coach, a Stanley Cup coach, and a good person.”

Future Discussions

Chayka, alongside Mats Sundin, the new executive senior advisor, plans to engage with Berube for further discussions later this week. However, he did not clarify whether Berube will continue as head coach for the upcoming 2026-27 season.

Berube’s Performance with the Leafs

Craig Berube, who has a contract for two more seasons, led the Leafs to a disappointing 32-36-14 record last season, resulting in 78 points. This marked the lowest total for the team in an 82-game season since the 2015-16 season when they finished with 69 points.

Past Achievements

  • Hired as head coach in the 2024-25 season, replacing Sheldon Keefe.
  • Achieved a remarkable 108-point season and led the Leafs to a first-round playoff victory over the Ottawa Senators.
  • Despite a strong start, the team lost in the second round to the Florida Panthers, who went on to win the Stanley Cup.

Coaching History

Before joining the Maple Leafs, Berube coached the St. Louis Blues for six seasons from 2018 to 2024. His tenure there included a highlight—the Blues’ victory in the Stanley Cup in 2019.

As the Maple Leafs look ahead, the role of Craig Berube remains uncertain, with new management aiming to evaluate the team’s future direction.
