Maritimes Prepare for Storm Bringing Rain, Wind, and Possible Snow

Severe weather is on the horizon for the Maritimes, prompting urgent alerts from Environment Canada. Atlantic Canadians are advised to prepare for significant rain, high winds, and the possibility of snow as a low-pressure system approaches.

Weather Warnings and Expected Conditions

Warnings have been issued for mainland Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and southern New Brunswick. Residents should clear drains and secure outdoor items to minimize damage.

  • Rainfall: Expected between 25 to 40 millimeters from this afternoon through early Monday.
  • Snow: Possible in higher elevations.
  • Winds: Gusts could reach 100 km/h, especially in western Cape Breton.

Transportation Disruptions

The upcoming storm will impact travel across the region. Northumberland Ferries has warned passengers of potential ferry cancellations between P.E.I. and Nova Scotia on Monday morning. Additionally, Marine Atlantic has cancelled multiple crossings between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland for Sunday and Monday.

Traffic Advisory and Infrastructure Precautions

The Confederation Bridge has issued a wind advisory, which will affect traffic between 3 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge in Halifax closed temporarily on Sunday due to high winds causing scaffolding to fall onto the roadway.

According to Steven Proctor, communications manager of Halifax Harbour Bridges, there were no injuries reported. Crews will inspect the area and clear the debris before reopening the bridge.

Power Outages

High winds and heavy rain have caused power outages across the region, affecting over 6,000 customers of Nova Scotia Power in western Nova Scotia on Sunday afternoon. Residents are advised to prepare for possible further outages as the storm progresses.

As the Maritimes brace for intense weather conditions, everyone is urged to stay informed and prioritize safety in the coming days.
