Major Bank to Close More Branches Next Month: Full List Updated
A prominent UK bank, Halifax, has announced an extensive plan to close multiple branches, affecting numerous customers across the country. The bank will shut down 25 branches next month alone, with the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre branch closing on June 2, 2023. This decision adds to a total of 34 closures across May and June.
Reasons Behind the Closures
Halifax’s decision to downsize its branch network stems from a significant shift in customer behavior. With increasing online banking preferences, there has been a notable decline in in-person visits to bank branches. To finalize the list of closures, Halifax took into account various factors, including:
- Transport access for customers
- Internet availability in the area
- Potential impacts on vulnerable customers
Branch Closures Scheduled for 2023
In total, Halifax has earmarked 46 branches for permanent closure between 2023 and 2024. The closures in June alone represent more than half of all branches the bank plans to shut during this two-year period. Customers are encouraged to check if their local branch is affected.
The announcement of these closures comes at a critical time. The UK Treasury has initiated an independent review focused on in-person banking services. Richard Lloyd, previously the executive director at Which?, will lead this review. Rocio Concha, from Which?, expressed concerns about the loss of face-to-face banking, highlighting the adverse effects on local communities.
Wider Implications of Bank Closures
The closure of branches contributes to an alarming trend in the UK’s banking landscape. More than one-third of the country’s branch network has already been eliminated. John Howells, CEO of LINK, emphasized the importance of regulations ensuring access to cash remains viable amid these closures. LINK will evaluate additional services in affected areas following branch shutdown announcements.
