Prince of Wales to Sell 20% of Duchy of Cornwall Over a Decade
The Prince of Wales is preparing to divest 20% of the Duchy of Cornwall within the next decade. This strategic decision aims to generate approximately £500 million, which will address pressing issues related to housing and environmental sustainability.
Details of the Duchy of Cornwall
The Duchy of Cornwall, valued at over £1 billion, was inherited by the Prince of Wales as he became heir to the throne. As the 25th Duke of Cornwall, Prince William currently receives nearly £23 million annually from the estate. These funds support his, the Princess of Wales’s, and their children’s public and charitable endeavors.
Geographic Focus Areas
In a bid to maximize impact, Prince William will concentrate his holdings in five key regions:
- Isles of Scilly
- Cornwall
- Dartmoor
- Bath area
- Kennington, south London
Vision for Positive Change
Will Bax, the chief executive of the Duchy of Cornwall, emphasized the importance of the duchy’s role in creating a positive societal impact. He stated that the estate should not merely exist to own land but should actively contribute to addressing social and environmental needs.
Bax revealed that the plan for selling part of the estate allows the duchy to partner in initiatives that foster change. The £500 million funding, derived from land sales and development income, will support these endeavors.
Current Tenant Concerns
This initiative has raised concerns among tenants. In March, residents of the Duchy of Cornwall expressed significant stress regarding plans to sell land on the historic Bradninch estate in Devon. The estate has been part of the duchy for centuries.
Bax reassured stakeholders that discussions are ongoing with all ten tenants, many of whom are interested in purchasing their farms. This open dialogue aims to ensure that tenant needs are considered in the duchy’s future plans.
