Concerns for the Cherry Blossom Trees
Despite their beauty, cherry blossoms face threats from large crowds. Rohith Rao, the development director at High Park Nature Centre, highlights the risks posed by visitors pulling branches or climbing trees for photos. Such actions can lead to long-term damage and disease.
Rao urges visitors to respect the trees, emphasizing that they also provide a home to the park’s birds and wildlife.
Protecting Wildlife
As crowds admire the cherry blossoms overhead, Carolynne Crawley, co-founder of Turtle Protectors, calls attention to another form of life below. Each spring, baby turtles emerge from nests located on the same hillside, coinciding with the cherry blossom bloom.
Crawley and her volunteers monitor these nests, ensuring the hatchlings are safely guided to water as they emerge from their nests. She encourages visitors to direct their gaze downward, where these tiny turtles are often overlooked amid the floral spectacle.
