“I Overcame the Setback and Remain Unchanged”

Juraj Slafkovsky, a 22-year-old forward for the Montreal Canadiens, is determined to maintain his unique playing style despite facing significant challenges in the playoffs. After a hard hit from Max Crozier during the fourth match against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Slafkovsky remained unshaken in his approach to the game.

I Overcame the Setback and Remain Unchanged

Slafkovsky reflected on the hit, which occurred last Sunday. He acknowledged it was a solid check but emphasized that he was unable to evade it due to the circumstances on the ice. “It’s a part of the game. I took the hit, and it doesn’t change anything about how I play,” he stated after rejoining his team for the third period of the game.

Playoff Performance and Adjustments

In the playoff series, Slafkovsky initially scored three power-play goals in the opening match against the Lightning. However, he has been quieter offensively in subsequent games. This shift led head coach Martin St-Louis to make adjustments during the fifth match, separating Slafkovsky from teammates Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, placing him with Ivan Demidov and Jake Evans instead.

  • Did not play the rest of the second period after the hit
  • Returned for the third period of the fourth match
  • Recorded personal highs of 30 goals and 43 assists this season

Slafkovsky admitted he aims to improve his offensive output. He expressed a desire to contribute more to the scoreboard. “I expect more from myself. I am ready to see the puck start going in,” he shared.

Defensive Efforts and Team Contribution

Despite not finding the net as frequently, Slafkovsky takes pride in his defensive play. His contributions were recognized by St-Louis, who sent him on the ice during crucial moments to help secure a 3-2 series lead. “I want to be a complete player, utilized in every situation. I feel I’m getting closer to that ideal,” he remarked.

As the playoffs progress, Slafkovsky remains focused on improving his game while staying true to his style. His resilience and desire to adapt will be essential as the series continues.
