Crayola Toys Recalled Due to Asbestos Contamination Risk

Due to the risk of asbestos contamination, Crayola has recalled certain toy kits sold across various retailers. This action comes after testing revealed that the sand within some products may contain trace levels of asbestos, a substance harmful to health even in small amounts.

Details of the Recall

The affected items are the Discovery Craft Box and Touchy Feely Craft Box, also known as the Sensory Craft Box. These products were sold between August 2025 and April 2026 for the Discovery Craft Box and from March 2025 to April 2026 for the Touchy Feely Craft Box.

  • Retailers involved include:
    • Argos
    • Asda
    • Sainsbury’s
    • The Works

The Works issued a recall notice emphasizing that asbestos should not be present in any amount. The recall has also been facilitated by Hunter Price International Limited, the importer of these products.

Safety Instructions for Consumers

The Office for Product Safety & Standards has provided guidelines for handling the contaminated products. Consumers are advised to:

  • Store any remaining sand in a heavy-duty plastic bag.
  • Securely tape the bag and keep it away from children.
  • Wear gloves and a mask when cleaning affected areas.
  • Use wet cloths to minimize dust and double-bag all materials used in cleanup.

Additionally, it is critical to prevent children and others from accessing areas where the contaminated sand has been used until cleanup is complete.

Wider Context of Asbestos Recalls

This recall of Crayola products is part of a troubling trend. Multiple recalls of toys and craft items due to potential asbestos contamination have occurred this year. Retailers like John Lewis, Hobbycraft, Amazon, and eBay have also faced similar recalls.

Sue Davies, the head of consumer protection policy at Which?, expressed deep concern over the repeated contamination issues related to children’s products from reputable brands. She highlighted the need for stronger product safety checks prior to items reaching the market and suggested that authorities should assess the risk associated with online sales, where regulations may be less stringent.

Consumers who purchased the recalled kits are encouraged to contact their respective retailers for refunds. Crayola has been urged to address this serious issue affecting consumer trust.
