New Substation to Cut Western P.E.I. Outages by 55%

Maritime Electric has launched a new switching station in Woodstock, promising to enhance power reliability for residents in western Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.). The facility, operational since March, aims to reduce power outages by approximately 55%. This follows a winter characterized by frequent outages in West Prince.

Investment and Infrastructure Improvements

The utility invested about $13.8 million into the Woodstock project. To offset this expense, customers will notice a slight increase in their monthly bills, approximately 0.54%. This adjustment was included in Maritime Electric’s 2024 operating budget.

New Switching Station Features

  • Dual transmission lines for improved reliability.
  • 50-megawatt transformer addition.
  • Part of a looped transmission system to ensure backup power supply.

Vice President of Sustainability and Customer Operations, Enrique Riveroll, highlighted that previous infrastructure relied on a singular transmission line. This created challenges during outages since multiple areas would be impacted simultaneously. The newly established dual lines offer a safeguard, rerouting power and mitigating disruption.

Long-Term Plans for P.E.I.’s Energy Needs

Maritime Electric plans to expand its infrastructure continuously. Riveroll stated that the utility adds about two substations yearly to meet increasing energy demands across P.E.I. The Woodstock station represents a significant milestone in this ongoing effort.

Future Developments

Following the success of the Woodstock substation, Maritime Electric has plans for another facility in Tignish. Currently, the utility operates 33 substations on the Island and remains focused on enhancing system reliability and safety.

Riveroll emphasized that reliability is paramount, stating, “We spend a lot of time planning so that when customers need electricity, they can get it.” The new Woodstock switching station is a crucial step toward achieving this goal.
