Montreal Businessman Sues for $20.8M After Ferrari Burns 56% of Body

A Montreal businessman, Richard Papazian, has initiated a lawsuit for $20.8 million against Ferrari Quebec, its employees, and Ferrari’s parent company in Italy. The legal action stems from a severe incident that occurred while Papazian was visiting the dealership on August 7, 2024, to explore the purchase of collectible cars.
Incident Details
During his visit, an employee attempted multiple times to start a 2004 Ferrari 360 owned by multimillionaire Luc Poirier. The vehicle, however, had crucial parts removed weeks earlier, leading to a dangerous situation.
- Vehicle Details: 2004 Ferrari 360
- Incident Date: August 7, 2024
- Injured Party: Richard Papazian
The absence of essential components, such as the fuel rail and injectors, rendered the car a ticking time bomb. As attempts continued to start the engine, fuel and vapors ignited, engulfing Papazian in flames as he stood near the vehicle.
Injuries and Recovery
Papazian suffered severe burns, affecting 56% of his body. He lost consciousness and required emergency medical assistance. His hospitalization lasted a month, followed by a prolonged recovery at home.
- Burn Severity: 56% of the body
- Hospital Stay: 30 days
- Time to Recovery: 120 days
Post-recovery, Papazian alleges he now faces permanent injuries, including chronic kidney disease, physical disfigurement, and vocal cord damage.
Response from Ferrari Quebec
In light of the incident, Ferrari Quebec and its shareholder, Gad Bitton, have remained largely silent. Papazian’s lawsuit claims that Bitton offered inadequate compensation, proposing limited-edition Ferraris that Papazian could sell.
- Gad Bitton’s Actions: Offered limited-edition vehicles
- Client Relations: No empathy shown towards Papazian
Papazian argues that Bitton’s handling of this tragic event showcased a shocking disregard for his suffering, treating it merely as a business transaction.
Luc Poirier’s Involvement
Interestingly, Luc Poirier, the owner of the Ferrari, is not implicated in the claims. He was unaware of the modifications made to his vehicle, which he left at the dealership solely for cosmetic repairs. Ferrari Quebec did not inform him about the circumstances surrounding the accident, and he learned of it through an anonymous call.
Poirier has since confirmed that his vehicle is a total loss, with his insurance company providing compensation.
Current Status of the Lawsuit
As of now, Ferrari Quebec has not responded to requests for comment regarding the ongoing lawsuit. Richard Papazian continues to seek justice for the severe injuries he sustained from this incident.
