Pet Food Shortage: Whistle Kit Makers Urgently Needed

The urgent pet food shortage has prompted the Dr. John P. Ruffing VMD Pet Food Pantry to seek immediate assistance. In April alone, 30 new households signed up for support. Additionally, a collaboration was established with a food bistro in Homewood to provide resources for 12 families.
Growing Demand for Pet Food Assistance
As of last night, two more food bistros and a nonprofit organization supporting homeless individuals expressed interest in partnering with the pantry. This development means that an extra 42 pet caretakers will now receive support in May, marking a significant 50% increase in demand. The rise in household registrations is likely linked to economic challenges facing many families.
Community Support Initiatives
To tackle this growing crisis, the pantry is putting out a call for volunteers to assemble whistle kits. These kits are crucial for upcoming events such as OUTrageous Bingo and various Pride celebrations. Community engagement is essential, and several organizations have already pledged their support:
- Animal Friends: Commiting to supply pet food regularly for distribution.
- Paws Across Pittsburgh: Monthly shipments of pet food have been confirmed.
- Allegheny City Brewery: Offering space to assemble whistle kits throughout May.
How You Can Help
The pantry is inviting community members to join them on Monday evenings in May from 4 PM to 7 PM at Allegheny City Brewery. Participants can help with assembling whistle kits and share thoughts on current events. Here’s how you can contribute:
- Drop by for a few minutes or stay for the entire session.
- Bring dry cat food, dry dog food, and canned food. The most urgent need is for dry cat food.
- Avoid donating litter.
- Consider making a financial donation to support the nonprofit’s operations.
- Contribute useful supplies such as paper plates, towels, duct tape, contractor bags, and clean, whole Styrofoam coolers.
Volunteer Opportunities
There are also options for individuals to get involved as drivers, either on a monthly basis or for one-time opportunities. These roles include delivering pet food and whistle kits throughout the region, including:
- Allegheny Valley
- Mon Valley
- East End and surrounding suburbs
- OUTrageous Bingo in the East End
Community members interested in picking up whistle kits for themselves or for others in need are encouraged to stop by during the designated hours. This initiative not only addresses the urgent pet food shortage but also fosters a sense of community solidarity.
