Disneyland Enforces New Restrictions, Igniting Guest Backlash

Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, has introduced a new set of restrictions aimed at enhancing guest behavior and operational reliability. This initiative, detailed by Natalie Katzka, the director of attractions engineering services, arises due to a significant increase in ride disruptions linked to guest actions.
New Guest Code of Conduct Enforced
The updated guest code of conduct is a response to the rising frequency of ride shutdowns, which reportedly has seen guest-related behavior account for 13% of such incidents in fiscal year 2025. This is an increase from the historical average of 10%.
Key Policy Changes
- Stow it, Don’t Show it: A new phone policy that prohibits visible phones on certain rides. Cast members will perform visual checks and may refuse to dispatch ride vehicles if a phone is seen.
- Banning Handheld Filming: Guests are now required to secure their phones in pockets or bags before boarding high-motion rides.
- Loose Items Regulation: Items like large insulated drinkware are now restricted to enhance safety and storage capacity.
These changes are particularly enforced on high-motion attractions such as Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway and the Incredicoaster, as reported by various sources.
Enhanced Security Measures
Bag checks at Disneyland have intensified, with security personnel conducting thorough inspections for prohibited items. The park has introduced additional storage solutions, including ride-side shelves and expanded locker availability to accommodate guests better. Furthermore, numerous water refill stations have been added.
Facial Recognition Technology
In addition to these measures, Disneyland has officially implemented facial recognition entry gates. This new technology replaces the traditional photo verification system, converting a guest’s face into a numerical biometric signature for entry, which is deleted within 30 days unless needed for fraud investigations. Guests can also choose to opt out via designated manual-entry lanes.
Disneyland continues to evaluate regulations in its effort to maintain a safe environment and enhance the overall guest experience. However, some visitors have expressed discontent regarding the new restrictions, particularly the phone ban, on social media platforms.
The implementation of these policies signifies Disneyland’s commitment to improving operational integrity while ensuring safety for all guests.
