Celebrini, Scheifele, Barzal, Rielly, McKenna to Join Team Canada at World Championship

Team Canada is gearing up for the 2026 Men’s World Hockey Championship, which will be held in Zurich and Fribourg, Switzerland from May 15 to 31. The team has added several prominent players to enhance its chances of clinching the coveted gold medal for the first time since 2023.

Key Additions to Team Canada

According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, four significant players have committed to joining Team Canada:

  • Macklin Celebrini – San Jose Sharks
  • Mark Scheifele – Winnipeg Jets
  • Mathew Barzal – New York Islanders
  • Morgan Rielly – Toronto Maple Leafs

Additionally, Gavin McKenna, the projected No. 1 pick for this year’s NHL Draft, will also represent Canada.

Player Performance Highlights

  • Macklin Celebrini: At just 19 years old, he had an impressive season, scoring 45 goals and providing 70 assists in 82 games, a franchise record for the Sharks. He also performed well at the Winter Olympics, netting five goals and five assists in six matches.
  • Gavin McKenna: This 18-year-old forward registered 15 goals and 36 assists over 35 games for Penn State this season.
  • Mark Scheifele: The 28-year-old center achieved a career-high with 103 points, which included 36 goals and 67 assists. Scheifele has not participated in a world championship since 2017.
  • Mathew Barzal: The Islanders’ forward scored 19 goals and 53 assists in 81 games this past season. Barzal last donned the Canadian jersey at the 2022 World Championship.
  • Morgan Rielly: A veteran at 32, he contributed 11 goals and 25 assists in 78 games during the 2025-26 season. Rielly previously won gold with Team Canada at the 2016 World Championship.

Looking Ahead to the Championship

Team Canada is determined to make a strong showing following a disappointing quarter-final exit last year, where they posted a perfect 6-0 record in the round-robin before losing to Denmark. With the addition of top talents like Celebrini, Scheifele, Barzal, Rielly, and McKenna, expectations are high for the upcoming tournament.
