Capital One Lounge Considered at RIC Airport, Commission Reports

Richmond International Airport (RIC) is currently exploring plans to open a VIP lounge within the next year. This development was discussed during a recent meeting of the Capital Region Airport Commission. The decision to add a lounge reflects RIC’s commitment to enhancing passenger experience amidst ongoing renovations of its main terminal, which will take several years to complete.
New Lounge Plans at Richmond International Airport
The proposed lounge will be located in Concourse A. According to airport spokesperson Troy Bell, this lounge aims to provide premium services for travelers. The space for the lounge is integrated into the plans for a new consolidated security checkpoint, part of a larger $253 million transformation project. While the checkpoint construction is expected to take years, the airport is determined to expedite the opening of the lounge.
Discussions with Potential Operators
RIC has initiated talks with various experienced global lounge developers. Notably, a third-party company that partners with Capital One was mentioned as a potential operator. Capital One currently runs lounges at seven domestic airports, including those in New York, Washington, and Las Vegas. An eighth lounge is planned for Charlotte.
- LaGuardia Airport
- John F. Kennedy Airport
- Dulles International Airport
- Reagan National Airport
- Las Vegas McCarran International Airport
- Denver International Airport
- Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport
- Upcoming: Charlotte Douglas International Airport
RIC’s Chief Growth Officer, Martin Rubinstein, highlighted the regional potential for Capital One branding, especially given the presence of Capital One offices in the area. This branding is considered relevant as the airport seeks to establish direct flights to Europe, which would likely cater to Capital One employees among others.
Future Developments
The opening of the lounge is projected before the completion of the new security facilities, with plans to launch within a year. Construction for the consolidated security checkpoint is anticipated to begin in late 2026.
In additional news, the Capital Region Airport Commission has amended its lease agreement with Spirit Airlines. The budget airline, which is facing its second bankruptcy in two years, will reduce its presence at RIC. Ticket counters will be decreased from six to four, and the baggage service office will be eliminated. Despite these changes, RIC officials confirmed that Spirit Airlines remains current on its rent obligations.
As RIC continues to develop its facilities and services, the addition of a lounge for travelers marks another step toward enhancing the airport experience for all passengers.
