Major Fire Strikes Bicolline Medieval Camping Event

A major fire recently struck the Bicolline Medieval Camping Event in Saint-Mathieu-du-Parc, Mauricie. The incident, which occurred last Saturday night, resulted in the destruction of 22 buildings integral to the community’s identity, impacting a tight-knit group of medieval immersion enthusiasts.
Impact on the Bicolline Community
The fire devastated not just structures but the spirit of the area. Étienne Bariteau, co-founder of the Notre-Dame-de-la-Rédemption order, witnessed the flames consume the first of his guild’s buildings. He expressed profound sorrow over the loss, referencing the destroyed structures as the birthplace of Bicolline’s history.
Bariteau remarked, “It’s like burning the beginning of the story.” The buildings, constructed over many years, held significant memories tied to events and role-playing activities in the expansive 140-hectare site.
Devastation and Rescue of Historical Artifacts
Among the items lost were helmets and pieces of armor scattered in the ashes. Bariteau recounted how he built his first guild building in 2002, symbolic of both personal and communal milestones. He noted the intense emotions experienced within these walls, which hosted gatherings, strategic meetings, and theatrical events.
- 22 buildings destroyed
- Major events included the Grande Bataille and various role-playing activities
- Community solidarity already emerging post-disaster
Community Resilience and Plans for the Future
Despite the destruction, Olivier Renard, owner of Bicolline, highlighted the strong sense of community that remains. He emphasized that while 10% of the constructions were affected, the essence of Bicolline lives on through its people.
Renard expressed optimism about rebuilding efforts, stating, “What makes Bicolline is not just the buildings. It’s the people and the community.” Frédéric Dalphond, another community member who lost his guild’s buildings, echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of collective resilience.
Immediate Response and Community Aid
An overwhelming wave of support from the community has already begun. Many are discussing temporary pavilions to recreate gaming spaces for guilds this summer, preserving the spirit of Bicolline amidst the destruction.
Renard believes the supportive actions will be powerful and invigorating. “This love and empathy will lead to incredible expressions from the community,” he stated. Plans for future events indicate that the fire, while a tragedy, could transform into a significant historical moment for the Bicolline experience.
