Florentino Perez Favors Jose Mourinho as Real Madrid’s Next Head Coach

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has reportedly set his sights on José Mourinho as the optimal candidate to succeed Álvaro Arbeloa as the club’s next head coach. Arbeloa, who took over in January after Xabi Alonso’s dismissal, is anticipated to be let go at the end of the season.

Key Decision-Making Factors

According to multiple unnamed sources, the decision regarding Madrid’s next head coach is primarily being driven by Perez. This marks a shift from the previous managerial appointment of Alonso, where the process was led by general manager José Ángel Sánchez but ultimately approved by Perez.

Perez aims to revitalize a project that has stagnated, as Madrid faces the prospect of a second consecutive season without a major trophy; neither La Liga, the Champions League, nor Copa del Rey has been claimed.

Mourinho’s Past Success and Controversies

While Pérez is eager to bring back Mourinho, opinions within the club are divided. Mourinho has a successful history with Madrid, having won three trophies between 2010 and 2013, including the 2011-12 La Liga title with a record points total. However, his previous tenure was not without issues, particularly tensions with then-captain Iker Casillas.

Mourinho’s candid remarks following a racially charged incident involving Vinicius Junior during a Champions League match on February 17 have drawn criticism. After the game, he suggested that Vinicius may have provoked the situation. While the accusations against Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni were ultimately related to homophobic conduct, Mourinho’s comments ignited further debate.

Mourinho’s Current Contract Situation

Presently, Mourinho is the head coach at Benfica, having joined in September. His contract extends until June 2027 but includes a €3 million clause that allows either party to terminate the agreement up to ten days after the final match of the season.

Other Coaching Candidates

In addition to Mourinho, El-Balad has reported that Real Madrid has looked into other managerial options. Possible candidates include:

  • Mauricio Pochettino – Currently managing a team in the U.S.
  • Didier Deschamps – The current coach of France.
  • Jürgen Klopp – Although he’s expressed contentment in his role as Red Bull’s head of soccer.

This trend of appointing former managers has been common for Real Madrid. Notable examples include Zinedine Zidane, who returned in 2019, and Carlo Ancelotti, who resumed his position in 2021 after a previous exit in 2015.
