Feds Deny Pharmacare to N.L., Says Health Minister

The federal government has officially declined to negotiate a pharmacare program that would provide free diabetes medication and contraceptives to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador (N.L.). This announcement was made by N.L. Health Minister Lela Evans on Monday.

Impact of the Federal Decision

Minister Evans expressed her disappointment, stating, “The door was closed on our province.” She highlighted the unfair exclusion of N.L. from the pharmacare program, which benefits residents in other regions such as British Columbia, Yukon, Manitoba, and Prince Edward Island.

Current Healthcare Collaboration

Despite the halt in pharmacare negotiations, the federal government remains open to collaborating with N.L. to enhance overall healthcare services. However, they have not commented on the possibility of resuming pharmacare discussions.

Federal Health Minister’s Statement

  • Minister Marjorie Michel is maintaining regular communication with her provincial counterparts.
  • Ongoing discussions between Health Canada and Newfoundland officials aim to address unique health needs.

Historical Context of Pharmacare

The universal Pharmacare Act, initiated by the Trudeau Liberals, received royal assent in 2024. Following its passage, only a select few provinces entered the program. Evans indicated that negotiations for N.L. were prematurely halted as the federal government decided to pilot the program solely with provinces already involved.

Statements from Minister Evans

Evans criticized the federal government’s decision, calling it a matter of national equity. She clarified that neither the current provincial administration nor the previous Liberal government is to blame for this outcome.

“The Liberal government had the door closed on them, and that wasn’t fair,” she noted. “The onus was on Canada to allow us to continue negotiating and join the program. We were excluded, and that is very disappointing.”

Evans reiterated N.L.’s interest in resuming negotiations, hoping for an opportunity to participate in the pharmacare initiative.
