Assassin’s Creed Hexe Director Benoit Richer Departs Ubisoft

Benoit Richer has made a significant career move by leaving Ubisoft to become a co-founder of Servo Games, a new independent studio located in Quebec. The announcement came via Richer’s LinkedIn profile, where he shared his new role as game director at the studio.

Benoit Richer’s Journey in Game Development

Before this transition, Richer served as the game director for the upcoming title in the Assassin’s Creed series, known as Codename Hexe. He has had a long and illustrious career, starting at Ubisoft Montréal as a level designer in 2001. Over the years, he also spent time at Electronic Arts and WB Games Montréal before returning to Ubisoft as a game director.

At Ubisoft, Richer played an important role in the development of Codename Hexe, a project that has seen significant changes in its leadership. He is notably the third key member to depart from the Codename Hexe team.

Key Departures from Codename Hexe

  • Marc-Alexis Côté, former franchise lead, left in October and later filed a lawsuit against Ubisoft for alleged “constructive dismissal.”
  • Clint Hocking, the creative director for Codename Hexe, departed the company in February amid a restructuring plan at Ubisoft.
  • Jean Guesdon has since taken over as the new creative director for the Assassin’s Creed project.

About Codename Hexe

Codename Hexe was officially announced in 2022 during a period of expansion for Ubisoft. Recently, CEO Yves Guillemot noted that the game is among several titles being developed with the support of Tencent-backed Vantage Studios, which also oversees the Far Cry franchise.

Richer’s departure from Ubisoft underscores the shifting landscape within the Assassin’s Creed development team and highlights the evolving nature of game production in the industry.
