Quebec MP Boulerice Leaves NDP to Join Québec Solidaire Provincially

Alexandre Boulerice, the only remaining federal Member of Parliament from the New Democratic Party (NDP) in Quebec, has announced his departure from the party. He intends to join Québec Solidaire to run in the provincial elections scheduled for October. Boulerice made his announcement from his federal riding of Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie, a position he has held since 2011.
Boulerice’s New Political Journey
During his announcement, Boulerice expressed his hope for a progressive presence in the Canadian Parliament. He remarked, “I hope there will be some progressives or left-wing people in the Parliament of Canada.” His intention is to continue advocating for better social policies that prioritize the rights of workers and women.
He will contend for a seat in the provincial riding of Gouin, which overlaps with his current federal riding. This district was previously represented by Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, a former co-spokesperson for Québec Solidaire, who has stated he will exit politics at the end of his current term. Boulerice views this shift as a return to his roots.
Support for Québec Solidaire
- Gouin has consistently voted for Québec Solidaire since 2012.
- The party’s recent polling at around 8% reflects struggles compared to other major parties.
Despite the low poll numbers, Boulerice remains unfazed and insists that they will not dictate his political decisions. He aligns with Québec Solidaire’s core values of public service and social justice.
Impact on NDP
Boulerice’s exit poses a substantial challenge for the NDP, which will now hold only five seats in Canada’s House of Commons. Notably, all remaining seats are located west of Ontario. His departure echoes the historical ebb and flow of party fortunes, emphasizing a critical moment for the NDP in Quebec.
Former NDP leader Jagmeet Singh previously appointed Boulerice as deputy leader, recognizing him as a vital figure in reconnecting with Quebec’s progressives. Singh noted Boulerice’s significance in the party’s narrative, referring to him as Quebec’s best-known MP.
Future of Québec Solidaire
Following Boulerice’s announcement, Ruba Ghazal and Sol Zanetti, co-spokespersons for Québec Solidaire, welcomed him with enthusiasm. Ghazal emphasized the importance of Boulerice’s experience and commitment to serving the community. She hinted that additional announcements regarding prospective candidates for the upcoming election would soon follow.
As Québec Solidaire prepares for the provincial elections this fall, its leadership sees promise in a growing progressive movement. With Boulerice’s inclusion, they aim to strengthen their representation in Quebec’s National Assembly.
