Delhi-NCR Schools Adjust Timings, Advance Summer Breaks Amid Heatwave Alert

As India contends with a severe heatwave, schools in the Delhi-NCR region are adjusting their timings and advancing summer breaks to protect students. The ongoing heatwave, characterized by temperatures exceeding 44°C, has prompted urgent actions to reduce exposure to harsh daytime conditions.
Revised School Timings in Delhi-NCR
In the Delhi-NCR area, various schools have revised their operating hours. The District Magistrate in Noida and Greater Noida has mandated new timings for all educational institutions, including government, private, CBSE, and ICSE schools. Starting on April 27, 2023, schools in Noida will operate from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
While Delhi has not yet finalized a state-wide timing change, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has activated the Heat Wave Action Plan. This plan includes several key measures:
- Water Bell System: Schools are required to signal breaks for hydration every 45-60 minutes.
- Activity Restrictions: Outdoor activities, including sports and assemblies, are suspended between 11 AM and 4 PM.
- Medical Support: Schools may provide ORS solutions to help prevent dehydration.
The anticipated summer vacation for most government schools in Delhi is expected to start on May 11, 2023.
School Timing Changes Across Other States
Other states have also adjusted school timings in response to the severe heat. Here are the revised hours:
| State | School Timing |
|---|---|
| Uttar Pradesh | 7:30 AM – 12:30 PM |
| Prayagraj (UP) | 7:30 AM – 12:00 PM |
| Jharkhand | 7:00 AM – 11:30 AM |
| Bihar (Patna) | Till 11:30 AM |
| Madhya Pradesh | 7:30 AM – 12:30 PM |
| Odisha | 6:30 AM – 10:30 AM |
| Maharashtra | 7:00 AM – 11:15 AM |
| Rajasthan | 7:30 AM – 12:30 PM |
Despite these changes, teachers in several states, including Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, are expected to remain on campus until early afternoon hours.
Early Summer Vacations Implemented
In light of the extreme conditions, many states have advanced their summer vacations. Here are the details:
- Chhattisgarh: Summer break runs from April 20 to June 15.
- West Bengal: Vacations began on April 22, except in hill areas.
- Odisha: School holidays start on April 27.
- Tripura: Schools will be temporarily closed from April 24 to May 1.
- Jharkhand: Local areas can recommend temporary school closures.
- Uttarakhand: All educational institutions from Classes 1 to 12 are closed in specific districts.
Conclusion
The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted that temperatures in Delhi-NCR will remain between 43°C and 45°C for at least the next 48 hours. To combat this, schools are required to appoint Nodal Officers to ensure compliance with heat safety measures. This initiative aims to prioritize student welfare in the face of ongoing climate challenges.
