Brighton Plans £80m Europe’s First Purpose-Built Women’s Stadium

Brighton and Hove Albion aims to revolutionize women’s football in Europe with its ambitious plans to construct a purpose-built women’s stadium. The projected cost for this groundbreaking project is estimated between £75 million and £80 million.

Location and Capacity

The new stadium will be situated at Bennett’s Field, adjacent to the Amex Stadium, the home ground of Brighton’s Premier League team. Designed to accommodate an initial capacity of 10,000 fans, it will feature a bridge walkway connecting it to the Amex Stadium.

Project Timeline

Brighton has already initiated the process for planning applications, aiming to officially open the stadium by the start of the 2030-31 season.

Features and Benefits

The proposed facility will serve as a permanent home for the women’s team, fostering a strong identity and encouraging long-term fan engagement. Key features of the stadium will include:

  • Top-tier changing rooms
  • High-standard pitch and recovery spaces
  • Family-friendly matchday amenities
  • Breastfeeding rooms and baby changing facilities
  • Dedicated areas for strollers
  • Social spaces for community events
  • Underground parking

Impacts on Women’s Football

Zoe Johnson, Brighton’s managing director of women’s and girls’ football, emphasized the significance of creating a stadium exclusive to women’s players, staff, and supporters. This project is notable as it will be the first of its kind in both the UK and Europe, ranking among only three such venues worldwide.

Johnson stated that the new stadium would not only assist in elevating the women’s team within the Women’s Super League (WSL) but also enhance their competitiveness in European club competitions. Furthermore, she expressed that the stadium would serve as a platform for academy fixtures, providing younger players with essential experience in a dedicated athletic environment.

Current Venue Situation

Brighton currently hosts the majority of its WSL matches at Crawley Town’s Broadfield Stadium, which is approximately 20 miles from the Amex. The new stadium will play a pivotal role in solidifying Brighton’s commitment to advancing women’s football.
