Chinese EV Leader BYD Sees UK Sales Skyrocket by 880%

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) leader BYD has reported an impressive surge in sales within the UK market, which skyrocketed by 880% in September. This growth reflects the company’s growing presence and competitiveness against Western automotive manufacturers.
BYD’s UK Market Share Growth
In September, BYD’s market share reached 3.6%, a significant increase from previous figures. The company aims to expand its lineup by launching more hybrid and electric models in the coming months. Bono Ge, BYD’s UK manager, expressed optimism about the brand’s prospects in Britain, stating it looks “hugely exciting.”
Record EV Sales in the UK
The UK’s overall EV sales achieved a record high last month, with nearly 73,000 pure battery electric vehicles sold, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Additionally, sales of plug-in hybrid cars experienced even greater growth, indicating a strong consumer shift towards electrification.
Top-Selling Vehicles
- Kia Sportage
- Ford Puma
- Nissan Qashqai
- Jaecoo 7
- BYD Seal U
Among the best-selling cars in September, Chinese models like the Jaecoo 7 and BYD Seal U made notable appearances in the top ten. This trend highlights an increasing acceptance of Chinese EV manufacturers in the UK market.
Challenges Ahead for EV Market
Despite the growth in EV sales, petrol and diesel vehicles continued to dominate new car sales, accounting for more than half of the total sales last month. This indicates a slow transition to electric options among consumers.
Moreover, a potential hurdle for Chinese EV exports looms. In October of the previous year, the European Union announced plans to impose tariffs of up to 45% on imports of Chinese electric vehicles. This decision could impact BYD’s future operations and growth in the European market.
