Michigan Hockey Set to Reclaim No. 1 Ranking with New Talent

Michigan hockey is poised to reclaim its number one ranking with an impressive roster of returning talent and fresh recruits for the upcoming season. As the team gears up for a competitive year, key players are opting to stay and develop further, while top prospects are set to join the program.

Returning Talent Strengthens Michigan Hockey

One of the standout players returning is rising junior forward Michael Hage. Known for his elite skills, Hage is expected to be Michigan’s top-line center, aiming to surpass 50 points next season. Previously, he might have considered joining the Montreal Canadiens, but he has chosen to continue his college journey instead.

Another pivotal player, rising senior forward Jayden Perron, is also anticipated to score over 50 points. While the Carolina Hurricanes have expressed interest, Perron’s smaller frame compared to NHL standards and only one year of high-level production may encourage him to remain at Michigan instead.

Additionally, forward Will Horcoff returns after a mixed performance last season. Despite leading the nation in goals early in the year, he struggled later on. Extra time in college hockey will aid his development before potentially joining the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Defensive Strength and Goaltending Depth

The defense will see the return of senior Ben Robertson and injured player Henry Mews, who was showing promise before his injury. Other returning defensemen include junior Dakoda Rheume-Mullen and sophomores Asher Barnett and Drew Schock, adding depth to the lineup.

At goaltender, rising sophomore Jack Ivankovic is expected to play consistently if healthy. Importantly, Stephen Peck will not enter the transfer portal, contributing to a solid goaltending tandem, positioned as one of the best in the NCAA.

Exciting New Additions to the Roster

The Wolverines are not only relying on returning players; they are also welcoming a strong influx of talent. This includes two first-round picks from last year’s NHL draft:

  • Jack Nesbitt – 12th overall pick by the Philadelphia Flyers, known for his defensive skills and ability to create scoring opportunities.
  • Cameron Reid – 21st overall pick by the Nashville Predators, recognized for his explosive skating and transition from defense to offense.

Additionally, forward Kieran Dervin, a 2025 third-round pick by the Vancouver Canucks, is switching his commitment to Michigan from Penn State. Also, JP Hurlbert is anticipated to be a mid-first-round pick in the upcoming NHL Draft.

Future Prospects

With these new signings, Michigan hockey is well-equipped to handle any potential losses of players like Perron, Horcoff, and Robertson over the summer. Regardless of roster changes, Michigan is set to maintain its position at the top of the polls and lead the Big Ten.
