Recent advancements in sports science have dramatically influenced the world of marathon running. Innovative technologies in racing shoes have emerged alongside a deeper understanding of athlete nutrition. This has transformed the way runners prepare for and compete in marathons.
Shoes Lighter Than Soap Shatter Marathon Record
Kiplangat Sawe, a Kenyan marathon runner, has made headlines by breaking marathon records thanks to cutting-edge shoe technology and specialized nutrition. A dedicated team from Maurten, a sports nutrition brand, collaborated with Sawe over the past year. They conducted extensive research, comprising six trips and 32 days spent refining his carbohydrate absorption.
Nutrition Strategy
The Maurten team focused on training Sawe to absorb 90-120 grams of carbohydrates per hour. This strategy helps maintain optimal glycogen levels, allowing Sawe’s body to utilize carbohydrates for energy efficiently. Keeping glycogen levels topped up is crucial for performance, especially over the grueling 26.2-mile distance.

Challenges and Controversies
Despite his achievements, Sawe’s record-breaking performance has not been without controversy. In 2025, fellow Kenyan runner Ruth Chepngetich received a three-year doping ban, casting a shadow over Kenyan athletes. In response, Sawe and his sponsor Adidas took proactive measures.
To ensure integrity in Sawe’s training regimen, Adidas invested $50,000 (£36,800) to enhance anti-doping testing before the Berlin Marathon. The Athletics Integrity Unit was asked to increase testing frequency, aiming to uphold the sport’s reputation and Sawe’s accomplishments.
As the landscape of marathon running evolves, the integration of advanced technology and rigorous nutritional strategies continues to shape the future of the sport.
