The Nobel Prize in Medicine has been awarded to three researchers with groundbreaking contributions to the immune system. However, the Nobel committee faced challenges reaching one of the laureates, Fred Ramsdell, who is currently on an off-grid hiking adventure.

This year’s recipients of the prestigious award include:
- Fred Ramsdell, aged 64
- Mary Brunkow, born in 1961
- Shimon Sakaguchi, aged 74
Ramsdell and Brunkow are based in Washington, while Sakaguchi is affiliated with Osaka University in Japan. They were recognized for their pioneering work on regulatory T-cells, crucial components in the immune system that prevent autoimmunity and promote peripheral immune tolerance.
Challenges in Communication
The Nobel committee encountered difficulty contacting Ramsdell due to his digital detox. Jeffrey Bluestone, his friend and co-founder of their research lab, also reported being unable to reach him. “I think he may be backpacking in the backcountry in Idaho,” Bluestone mentioned.
Brunkow, on the other hand, was successfully contacted after some delay. The time difference between the U.S. West Coast and Stockholm, which is nine hours, posed another hurdle for the committee. Thomas Perlmann, secretary-general of the Nobel committee, commented on the situation during the press conference.
Impact of Their Research
The trio’s research has opened new avenues in the study of the immune system. Their findings on regulatory T-cells have been instrumental in the development of potential treatments currently undergoing clinical trials.
Sakaguchi’s major discovery in 1995 identified a new class of immune cells, while Ramsdell and Brunkow contributed significantly in 2001. Their work is anticipated to enhance our understanding of immune responses and could lead to advancements in treating autoimmune diseases.
Historical Context
This isn’t the first time the Nobel committee has faced communication issues. In 2020, they struggled to reach winners of the economics prize, leading to a memorable incident where phone calls had to be redirected to family members.
