Alert: Parvovirus Outbreak Hits Dogs in Sherbrooke

Dog owners in Sherbrooke are urged to exercise heightened caution following an outbreak of parvovirus in the area. The Société protectrice des animaux (SPA) de l’Estrie issued a warning on Monday, alerting pet owners to this highly contagious and frequently fatal infection, particularly for puppies.
Parvovirus Outbreak in Sherbrooke
Infection hotspots have been identified in wooded areas near Évangéline Street, close to the École internationale du Phare. Reports indicate that multiple dogs are already showing symptoms of this dangerous disease.
Symptoms and Transmission
The parvovirus primarily affects young dogs, unvaccinated animals, and those in crowded environments. Symptoms to watch for include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Presence of blood in feces
- Dehydration
- Loss of appetite
The virus is primarily transmitted through contact with contaminated surfaces or exposure to infected feces. Unfortunately, many dog guardians may still take their pets to public spaces, potentially increasing the virus’s spread.
Veterinary Guidance and Vaccination
Due to the seriousness of the illness, the SPA urges owners to seek veterinary care immediately upon observing any of the aforementioned symptoms. Additionally, they recommend that puppies receive vaccinations starting between 6 to 8 weeks of age to help prevent this potentially deadly infection.
As the situation develops, all dog owners in Sherbrooke should remain vigilant and limit outdoor activities to safeguard their pets from this outbreak.
