Quebec MP Alexandre Boulerice Exits NDP to Pursue Provincial Career

Alexandre Boulerice, a long-serving Member of Parliament, is set to leave the federal New Democratic Party (NDP) to pursue a provincial career with Québec Solidaire. Sources indicate that he will officially announce his transition on Monday.

Boulerice’s Political History

Having represented the Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie riding since 2011, Boulerice is a prominent figure in Quebec politics. He is notably the last NDP MP remaining in the province.

Prior to Boulerice, the riding was held by the Bloc Québécois for nearly two decades. His departure marks a significant challenge for the NDP, which will be left with only five seats in the House of Commons if he follows through on his plans.

Transition to Provincial Politics

According to reports, Boulerice will seek election in the Gouin riding during the upcoming provincial election. This seat is currently occupied by Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, former co-spokesperson of Québec Solidaire, who has announced he will not seek re-election in 2026.

The Gouin riding has reliably supported Québec Solidaire since 2012. However, challenges loom ahead, as the party’s presence in polls has diminished.

Current Status of Québec Solidaire

  • Québec Solidaire has 11 seats in the 125-seat National Assembly.
  • Recent polling by Qc125 indicates the party is currently at around 10% support.
  • Predictions suggest the party may secure between two to eight additional seats in the upcoming elections.

This anticipated shift by Boulerice symbolizes a strategic move as he aligns himself with a party facing both challenges and opportunities in Quebec’s evolving political landscape.
