Ruto Strengthens Re-election Support in Murang’a

President William Ruto is reinforcing his re-election support in Murang’a County during a recent development tour. He launched several projects and emphasized the importance of unity and development over political division. Ruto accused opposition leaders of spreading negativity, claiming it distracts from his administration’s progress.
Key Development Initiatives Announced
During the visit, Ruto oversaw the commissioning of the Kiharu Technical and Vocational Training (TVET) hub and the groundbreaking ceremony for Kiharu TVET hostels. His administration has initiated various projects aimed at improving infrastructure and living standards, including:
- Construction of roads
- Development of affordable housing units
- Upgrade of Mumbi Stadium
- Establishment of the Kayole ESP Market
Notably, the President referenced the Kanjama/Kagumoini/Gitugi/Chui/Karugia road, which had previously been launched. He stated that the Kenol–Marua dual carriageway is 98% complete and highlighted the allocation of Sh2 billion for the completion of the Mau Mau Road.
Political Context and Challenges
Ruto directed his focus towards his political base in the Mt. Kenya region, emphasizing his commitment to fulfilling election promises. He challenged his opponents, including a mention of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, stating they lack a concrete agenda to contest effectively in upcoming elections. “You lack ideas to transform the nation,” Ruto asserted.
In contrast, Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome faced backlash in Murang’a town after urging local leadership to support government initiatives regarding taxation and fuel prices.
Government Investments in Murang’a
The government is actively investing in Murang’a, with Sh1.1 billion allocated this year to connect 14,000 households to electricity. In the past three years, an additional 37,000 households have been connected. Furthermore, there are plans for 23 modern markets and the establishment of 6,800 affordable housing units valued at Sh27 billion.
Local Support for Ruto’s Election Bid
Younger constituents are also rallying behind Ruto. Murang’a University Students’ President Alex Kiprop announced the formation of a youth movement called Youth for Ruto 2027 (YR27). This group aims to mobilize support across the nation as the next election approaches.
Local leaders, including Governor Irungu Kang’ata, advocated for enhanced cooperation between national and county governments to accelerate industrialization efforts. The call to nominate Dr. Stanley Kamau to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) was also voiced, following Dr. Nancy Macharia’s retirement.
In conclusion, Ruto’s administrative focus remains on development and unity, as he seeks to consolidate support for his re-election campaign in Murang’a County.
