Struggling Hoffman Leads Blue Jays to Rotate Closer Role

General manager Ross Atkins of the Toronto Blue Jays provided significant updates regarding the team’s roster on Friday. A notable change involves relief pitcher Jeff Hoffman, who has recently faced challenges on the mound.
Jeff Hoffman and the Closer Role
Due to his struggles, Hoffman will no longer serve as the primary closer. Instead, the team plans to adopt a committee approach for the closer role. “We will share the responsibility across multiple pitchers in the short term,” Atkins stated. Despite this shift, Hoffman will still be available for crucial outs and may appear in the ninth inning.
Hoffman, now 33 years old, has recorded a 7.59 ERA over 10.2 innings this season. His performance has included nine earned runs, ten hits, and two home runs, alongside six walks.
Recent Performance
Hoffman’s last performance was on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels. He managed to strike out Zach Neto but allowed a single to Mike Trout. Subsequently, Hoffman hit Jo Adell with a pitch, leading to the tying run scoring from a hit by Yoan Moncada. Following this, Blue Jays manager John Schneider opted to replace Hoffman with Louis Vardland. Toronto ultimately secured a 4-2 win in that game.
Schneider confirmed the closer committee approach while speaking to Sportsnet. He noted, “Louis has performed well in high-leverage situations,” indicating that Vardland could be one of the options to step into the closer role alongside Mason Fluharty and Tyler Rogers.
Injury Updates
Atkins shared updates on other players as well. Starting pitcher Trey Yesavage has shown positive signs in his recovery, although a decision on his next outing remains pending. There is a chance he could play in the majors soon.
Fellow pitcher Jose Berrios is also making progress. Atkins mentioned, “He is throwing a bullpen session today and will pitch in Buffalo next.” This is a promising sign for his return.
Outfield Updates
Outfielder George Springer is actively participating in baseball activities while recovering from a foot injury. Though he is feeling better and engaging in hitting and running, he is not yet active on the roster.
Addison Barger shares a similar situation, as he has begun hitting and running but has yet to face live pitching. Starting pitcher Shane Bieber is also preparing for a return, with Atkins stating that Bieber is close to facing hitters again. “This marks the beginning of Bieber’s Spring Training,” he noted.
