West Brom Penalized Two Points for EFL Financial Rule Breach in Championship

West Bromwich Albion has received a two-point deduction due to a breach of the English Football League’s (EFL) financial regulations. This decision has impacted their league standing, as the team has dropped from 18th place to 20th place in the Championship.

Implications of the Deduction

The deduction brings West Brom’s total points to 50, now only six points above the relegation zone. With two matches remaining in the season, the Baggies need at least one point to ensure they remain in the Championship.

Upcoming Matches

  • April 25: Host Ipswich Town (kickoff at 12:30 PM)
  • May 2: Final match against Sheffield Wednesday

West Brom has a superior goal difference compared to Oxford United, who are currently in the relegation zone. The Baggies are six goals better off than Oxford.

Reasons for the Points Deduction

The controversy surrounding the points deduction stems from a disagreement regarding financial categorization. The new ownership group, led by Bilkul, contends that around £5 million in interest payments related to a £20 million loan from previous owner Guochuan Lai should not be included in the club’s Profitability and Sustainability (P&S) calculations. They believe these payments are the responsibility of the ownership, not the club.

However, the EFL maintains that these interest payments must be counted as part of the club’s financial obligations. An EFL Compliance Report indicated that West Brom’s financial losses surpassed the Upper Loss Threshold of £39 million over the three-year period concluding in the 2024/25 season.

Official Ruling

The hearings held on April 22 and 23 concluded with the determination that West Brom exceeded the loss threshold. Consequently, the EFL has imposed an immediate two-point deduction, aligned with its sanctioning guidelines.

The club has the option to appeal this decision within 14 days. If an appeal is filed, it will be considered within 28 days. This ruling will significantly affect West Brom’s bid to secure their Championship status.
