New Laws Spur Americans to Pursue Dual Canadian Citizenship
Recent changes to Canadian citizenship laws have led to a notable increase in applications from Americans seeking dual citizenship. This shift began following the new law that took effect on December 15, 2025, allowing a broader range of individuals to qualify based on their ancestry.
Overview of the New Canadian Citizenship Law
The recent amendment in Canada’s citizenship regulations facilitates a more accessible path to citizenship for those with Canadian ancestors. Previously, citizenship by descent was restricted to one generation, but the new law allows individuals to claim citizenship if they can prove direct descent from a Canadian grandparent or further back.
Eligibility Criteria
- Individuals must demonstrate direct lineage to a Canadian ancestor like a grandparent or great-grandparent.
- Those born after December 15, 2025, must prove that their Canadian parent resided in Canada for at least 1,095 days.
Surge in Applications
Numerous Americans are now pursuing dual citizenship, influenced by factors such as political issues and job opportunities. For instance, immigration attorney Amandeep Hayer reported a significant uptick in consultations—rising from about 200 cases annually to over 20 consultations each day.
Many applicants, like Zach Loud from Minnesota, discovered their status as Canadian citizens through their heritage. “We were already considering opportunities outside the U.S., but the citizenship option made Canada a priority,” he noted.
Public Reactions and Motivations
Different motivations drive Americans to seek dual citizenship. Some, like Michelle Cunha from Massachusetts, cite political dissatisfaction as a reason for their decision. She reflected on decades of political activism and expressed the need for a different environment.
Others, such as Maureen Sullivan from Florida, are motivated by personal experiences, including encounters with immigration enforcement that heightened concerns about security in the U.S.
Cost and Process of Application
The application for proof of Canadian citizenship costs approximately $75 for those with documentation in order. However, the expenses can rise significantly for those requiring assistance in locating required records. Some applicants, like Cunha, reported costs nearing $6,500 when hiring legal help.
The processing time for applications is around 10 months, with over 56,000 people currently awaiting decisions. Statistics show that from December 15 to January 31, Canada confirmed citizenship by descent for 1,480 individuals, although not all were Americans. In the previous year, approximately 24,500 Americans obtained dual citizenship.
Public Sentiment in Canada
Opinions among Canadians regarding the influx of American applicants vary. Fen Hampson, a professor of international affairs at Carleton University, noted that while Canadians are generally welcoming, there is some concern about individuals with minimal ties to Canada obtaining citizenship. This sentiment reflects a protective stance toward Canadian identity and resources.
As these changes continue to unfold, the landscape for American applicants pursuing dual Canadian citizenship is evolving, suggesting a trend that may persist in the future.
