Toronto police recently revealed the outcomes of a comprehensive cybercrime investigation. This operation, termed Project Lighthouse, targeted a sophisticated cybercrime network that exploited mobile technology to perpetrate fraud across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Authorities identified the use of a mobile “SMS blaster” that impersonated cell towers. This device disrupted legitimate networks, enabling the criminals to send fraudulent messages to thousands of unsuspecting individuals. Over the course of the investigation, the operation caused more than 13 million network disruptions.
Detective Sergeant Lindsay Riddell noted that the investigation commenced in November 2025 after a cybersecurity partner discovered a rogue mobile tower in downtown Toronto. The device subsequently shifted throughout the GTA, affecting communication and even limiting access to emergency services like 911.
