Bruce Power and SaskPower Partner to Evaluate Saskatchewan’s Large Reactor Technology

Bruce Power and SaskPower have officially entered a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to assess large nuclear reactor technologies in Saskatchewan. This partnership aims to leverage Bruce Power’s extensive expertise in nuclear generation and project development.

Collaboration for Nuclear Development

SaskPower is evaluating the implementation of large nuclear reactors, a process that aligns with the province’s Energy Security Strategy. The strategy outlines a roadmap for nuclear energy development to meet the growing electricity demands and future export opportunities.

Jeremy Harrison, Minister Responsible for SaskPower, emphasized the importance of collaboration. He noted that the cooperation between Bruce Power and SaskPower will ensure well-informed decisions that benefit both provinces and the nation.

Sharing Expertise and Resources

Most of Canada’s nuclear industry is concentrated in Ontario. Thus, this MOU formalizes a strategic partnership, facilitating the sharing of knowledge and alignment on nuclear policies at both federal and provincial levels.

  • James Scongack: “We’re uniquely positioned to collaborate with SaskPower for clean energy.”
  • Rupen Pandya: “Reliable, baseload power is crucial for economic sectors such as mining and agriculture.”

Nuclear Power’s Role in Saskatchewan

SaskPower aims to benefit from Bruce Power’s insights, particularly from the proposed Bruce C Project, which is the first new nuclear development in Canada undergoing federal Impact Assessment.

Meanwhile, Bruce Power’s current fleet of eight CANDU reactors continues to operate after decades of service. They provide stable energy while plans for expanding capacity are underway, which could introduce up to 4,800 megawatts of additional nuclear power.
