Xabi Alonso Secures FSG Agreement, Reveals Two Key Liverpool Signings

Xabi Alonso is poised to become Liverpool’s new manager, replacing current boss Arne Slot at the end of this season. Reports indicate that Alonso has already identified two key signings for the club: Micky van de Ven and Anthony Gordon.

Xabi Alonso’s Upcoming Role at Liverpool

Alonso, who previously managed Bayer Leverkusen to a Bundesliga title in 2024, is set to take over from Slot, who won the Premier League with Liverpool last season but is struggling in the current campaign. Liverpool’s performance has declined significantly, placing their hopes of finishing in the top five at risk. The Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s owners, are expected to assess Slot’s future by summer 2026.

Managerial Transition and Key Signings

The Spanish media report suggests that Alonso has nearly finalized an agreement to steer Liverpool moving forward. Two aspects are influencing this agreement:

  • Signing Micky van de Ven from Tottenham Hotspur to bolster defense.
  • Acquiring Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United to enhance the attacking lineup.

With Tottenham potentially facing relegation, the pressure is on van de Ven to leave the club. His speed and capability in open-field situations align with Alonso’s vision for a more aggressive style of play.

Future Prospects for Liverpool’s Squad

In addition to the expected signings, Liverpool may also see key departures. One notable name is Alexis Mac Allister, who has reportedly expressed a desire to leave Anfield this summer. The club is currently evaluating his request.

As for Gordon, the versatile player primarily operates as a left winger but could effectively be utilized on the right due to his right-footedness. This strategic acquisition aligns with Liverpool’s needs, especially with the anticipated departure of Mohamed Salah.

Alonso’s imminent arrival and identified targets signal a strategic direction aimed at revitalizing Liverpool’s squad and performance on the field.
