Blackburn Rovers expresses profound sorrow over the recent passing of Tony Parkes, a revered figure within the club. The legendary coach and player died at the age of 76, leaving a considerable impact on the team’s history.
Remembering Tony Parkes: A Premier League Winning Coach
Tony Parkes, fondly known as ‘Mr Blackburn Rovers,’ transitioned from player to coach, dedicating over three decades to the club. He made his debut with Blackburn in 1970, joining from Buxton Town for £5,000. During his playing career, he accumulated 409 appearances, netting 46 goals before retiring in 1982.
Coaching Legacy
After retirement, Parkes joined the coaching staff at Ewood Park. He served as caretaker manager on six separate occasions between 1986 and 2004. He stepped in as interim manager following the exits of notable coaches including:
- Bobby Saxton (December 1986 – February 1987)
- Don Mackay (September – October 1991)
- Ray Harford (October 1996 – June 1997)
- Roy Hodgson (November – December 1998)
- Brian Kidd (November 1999 – March 2000)
- Graeme Souness (September 2004)
Parkes was instrumental in Blackburn’s Premier League triumph during the 1994/95 season while under the management of Kenny Dalglish. This remarkable achievement marked a high point in Blackburn’s history, leading to their participation in European competitions the subsequent season.
Tributes and Farewell
The club released a heartfelt statement expressing condolences to Parkes’ family, particularly his daughter, Natalie. They emphasized his legendary status and profound connection to the team. To commemorate his life and contributions, a special tribute is planned during the final home game against Leicester City on May 2nd.
Parkes later took his expertise to Blackpool, where he assisted in securing promotion to the Championship in the 2006/07 season. He briefly became caretaker manager following Simon Grayson’s departure in December 2008, before exiting the club in the summer of 2009.
