Sony Launches Age Verification for PlayStation in UK and Ireland

Sony is taking steps to implement age verification for PlayStation users in the UK and Ireland. This initiative is in response to the UK’s Online Safety Act (OSA) to ensure a safer gaming environment. Currently optional, age verification will become mandatory by June 2026, according to Sony’s support page.
Impact of Age Verification on PlayStation Features
Failure to complete the age verification process could lead to restrictions on various PlayStation communication features. Users may lose access to:
- Voice and text chat
- Messaging services
- Third-party communication platforms like Discord
- Broadcasting and sharing capabilities
- Streaming to services such as YouTube and Twitch
- In-game user-generated content
Additionally, for games with unique communication systems, features such as in-game chat and content uploads may also become unavailable. Sony noted that “each title is designed differently,” leading to variations in affected features.
Age Verification Process
For this age verification procedure, Sony has partnered with Yoti, the same service used by Microsoft for Xbox. Microsoft started its age verification roll-out in July, soon after the OSA was enacted. Users looking to verify their age can choose from several options:
- Presenting a government-issued ID
- Using a facial scan to estimate age
- Completing a check through their mobile service provider
According to Sony, “Age verification is important to confirm that you’re of appropriate age for an adult account in the UK and Ireland.” This process aims to provide a safer, age-appropriate gaming experience, aligning with broader online safety efforts.
