Zelensky Criticizes US Envoys’ Absence in Kyiv as ‘Disrespectful’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his disappointment over the absence of US envoys in Kyiv, describing it as “disrespectful.” This remark came during an interview with a local news outlet, highlighting the diplomatic tensions amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Zelensky’s Critique of US Diplomacy
Zelensky criticized the decision of US officials to visit Moscow while ignoring Kyiv. “I understand we have complex logistics,” he stated, suggesting alternative meeting locations if necessary. The officials in question are Jared Kushner, former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, and special envoy Rick Witkoff.
Background on US Officials’ Planned Visit
Earlier this April, it was reported that Kushner and Witkoff intended to visit Ukraine. However, the trip did not materialize due to escalating military tensions in the Middle East, particularly involving the US and Israel’s military actions against Iran.
Recent Developments in Ukraine War Talks
According to Zelensky, the focus of US diplomacy has currently shifted towards ceasefire negotiations with Iran, sidelining Ukraine. In the autumn of 2025, talks progressed when Russian and US officials began discussing a plan purportedly aimed at ending the Ukrainian conflict. However, many aspects of this proposal were viewed as unfavorable to Ukraine.
Key Issues in Ongoing Negotiations
Several critical topics remain unresolved, most notably:
- The return of Ukrainian children deported by Russia since the war began.
- Moscow’s insistence on regime change in Kyiv.
- The status of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region.
Both sides have so far failed to reach a mutually acceptable agreement on these issues, leading to discussions being at a standstill.
Statements from Zelensky’s Team
Kyrylo Budanov, Zelensky’s chief of staff, acknowledged the challenging dynamics of the negotiations. He emphasized that both Kyiv and Moscow must eventually confront the reality of either finding a compromise or accepting continued conflict. “We are looking for a compromise between two completely polar positions,” he remarked.
As the situation continues to evolve, the need for cooperation between Ukraine and the United States remains critical for any progress in achieving peace.
