Body Discovered Three Weeks Post-Death, Despite Police Visit

On August 27, 2025, police from the Nunavik Police Service (SPN) were called to the home of Patrick*, a 39-year-old man. Concerned about his wellbeing, a friend requested a wellness check. This marked the second visit by the police to Patrick’s residence in three weeks. During their visit, the officers forced entry and discovered Patrick unresponsive, lying face down on the floor.

Coroner Me Geneviève Thériault later reported that it was evident Patrick had been deceased for several days. The body exhibited extensive decomposition, complicating efforts to determine the exact cause of death. However, the autopsy ruled out any traumatic injuries and excluded foul play, leading the coroner to speculate that Patrick likely died of natural causes around August 5, 2025.

Timeline of Events Leading to Death

Initial Signs of Distress

On August 1, 2025, Patrick had shown clear signs of distress. He contacted the SPN himself, requesting transportation to the health center in Umiujaq. Described by friends as struggling with alcohol consumption, he reported not eating for several days and experiencing nightly vomiting, weakness, and confusion. These symptoms emerged after a heavy drinking episode.

Medical Evaluation

During the medical evaluation, no physical abnormalities were detected. The health staff suspected that his symptoms were linked to a situational crisis rather than a medical emergency. Despite his complaints, Patrick denied any significant disruptions in his life and declined to consult a psychologist. Shortly after his initial assessment, he reassured the nurse that he had eaten and felt better.

First Police Visit

A few days later, on August 5, a friend again contacted the SPN, worried about concerning statements made by Patrick. Police arrived but received no answer after knocking. After further clarification from the friend, the officers determined that there was no immediate threat to Patrick’s life and left without taking further action, noting that no additional steps would be performed.

Coroner’s Recommendations

Following the investigation, Coroner Thériault expressed serious concerns regarding the police’s response during their first visit on August 5. The lack of clear directives left officers without guidelines on how to handle wellness check calls. Thériault noted it was impossible to determine whether Patrick’s life could have been saved had the officers forced entry that day.

To prevent similar outcomes in the future, the coroner recommended that the Nunavik Police Service establish clear procedures for handling wellness checks, including protocols for forced entry when appropriate.

  • Date of body discovery: August 27, 2025
  • Coroner: Me Geneviève Thériault

This case highlights the critical need for clear protocols in police wellness checks, ensuring timely interventions can be made when necessary.
