Oilers’ Hyman Ready to Push Forward After Wrist Injury Recovery

Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman is determined to make an impactful return after a wrist injury disrupted his playoff run last season. Hyman, who led the NHL playoffs in hits, suffered a dislocated wrist during a collision with Dallas Stars winger Mason Marchment. This injury sidelined him for the final games of the series against the Florida Panthers and required surgery.
Hyman’s Impressive Playoff Performance
Before his injury on May 27, 2025, in Game 4 of the Western Conference final, Hyman had an impressive playoff record. He scored five goals and provided six assists while accumulating 111 hits in just 15 games. Despite being out for the first 19 games of the regular season, the 33-year-old forward remains committed to his physical style of play as the Oilers prepare for the 2026 playoffs.
Commitment to Physical Play in the Playoffs
Hyman emphasizes that the nature of playoff hockey demands physicality. He stated, “It’s important to bring physicality in the playoffs. These games are different; they’re tighter and harder to score.” His coach, Kris Knoblauch, supports Hyman’s aggressive play, recognizing him as one of the best forecheckers in the league.
Team Dynamics and Contributions
The Oilers are not relying on Hyman alone to deliver that physical edge. Teammate Vasily Podkolzin also demonstrated significant abilities in this area, recording 100 hits in the last playoffs and leading the team with 242 hits in the regular season.
Experience of Adam Henrique and Mattias Ekholm
- Adam Henrique, now with the Oilers, has experienced playoff action, including a previous stint with the Anaheim Ducks.
- He commended his former Ducks teammate Troy Terry for his vital role in getting Anaheim back into the playoffs.
- Defenceman Mattias Ekholm boasts twelve consecutive seasons in the playoffs, aspiring for his first Stanley Cup after reaching the finals with different teams.
Ekholm acknowledged the challenge but is optimistic about this season, noting, “We’ve got as good of a shot as anybody else.” He aims to make the most of the playoff experience, having returned from an undisclosed injury during the previous postseason.
With a blend of veteran leadership and tenacity, the Oilers, led by players like Hyman, Henrique, and Ekholm, are poised to make a significant impact in this season’s playoff hunt.
