PEC Hosts Engaging Events for Earth Week Celebration

Prince Edward County is hosting a series of events to celebrate Earth Week. These activities aim to promote environmental awareness and encourage sustainable practices among residents.

Bay of Quinte Greens’ Speaker Series

The series kicks off on Wednesday, April 22, at 6:30 PM at The Andrew, located at 31 King Street, Picton. This event, titled “Thinking of Going Green? Real Experiences from the County,” features discussions on various sustainable technologies and practices.

  • Solar Energy: Tyler Blower from Otterenergy will discuss solar energy options.
  • Electric vs. Hybrid Vehicles: Insights will be shared by Tyler O’Brien from Belleville Hyundai.
  • Heating Systems: Matt Bully from County Heat Pumps will cover ground and air heat pumps.

Registrants can attend in person or virtually if they cannot be present on-site.

Owen Jones Memorial Community Cleanup

The Owen Jones Memorial Community Cleanup is set for Saturday, April 25. This event supports the Quinte Trash Bash and is an opportunity to beautify the community.

Participants can collect cleanup supplies at:

  • 115 Lake Street, Picton
  • Shire Hall, 332 Picton Main Street
  • Home Hardware locations in Wellington and Picton

Waste collected can be dropped off free of charge at several designated locations including:

  • Picton Home Hardware (13544 Loyalist Parkway)
  • Midtown Brewery parking lot (266 Wellington Main Street)
  • 15 Coleman Street, Ameliasburgh
  • 2179 County Road 17, Milford

Ontario Farmland Trust Tours

On the same day, from 10 AM to 12 PM, the event at Ackerman Protected Farm (130 Walmsley Road, Milford) will provide insights into farmland conservation. Visitors can learn about the importance of preserving farmland for environmental health.

  • Schedule:
  • 10:00 AM: Begin with refreshments and browsing the Ontario Farmland Trust booth.
  • 10:30 AM: Formal remarks by Jen Ackerman and Martin Straathof.
  • 10:45 AM: Walking tour.
  • 11:40 AM: Networking and closing remarks.

In the afternoon, a similar tour will occur at Bazett-Jones Protected Farm (2086 County Road 7, Picton) from 2 PM to 4 PM, with a focus on farmland conservation benefits.

PEC Repair Café

Additionally, on April 25, the PEC Repair Café will be held from 11 AM to 3 PM at the Picton branch of the Prince Edward County Public Library (223 Picton Main Street). Hosted by Feral Folc, this event encourages repairing instead of discarding household items.

Items eligible for repair include:

  • Fabrics and clothing
  • Electronics
  • Household items
  • Small appliances
  • Small wooden furniture
  • Bicycles

Volunteers will assist attendees in diagnosing and completing repairs.
