Nottingham Forest Confident in Complying with UEFA Multi-Club Ownership Rules

Nottingham Forest is optimistic about adhering to UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules, especially as they aim for Champions League qualification through the Europa League. The club currently faces the challenge of Premier League relegation while also competing in the Europa League semi-finals against fellow English club Aston Villa.

UEFA Multi-Club Ownership Regulations

UEFA rules prohibit any individual or entity from holding control over multiple clubs participating in the same European competition. If a conflict arises, only one club would be allowed to compete, potentially jeopardizing the future of both Nottingham Forest and Olympiacos, owned by Forest’s owner Evangelos Marinakis.

  • Marinakis is also the owner of Olympiacos, which is vying for a Champions League spot in the Greek Super League.
  • If both clubs qualify, one may have to forgo participation based on UEFA regulations.

Steps Taken by Nottingham Forest

On April 17, a filing at Companies House confirmed Marinakis’s departure as a person of significant control at Nottingham Forest. This was an essential move to comply with UEFA guidelines. However, concerns were raised about the timing of this announcement, as the deadline for compliance was March 1.

Blind Trust Mechanism

The blind trust arrangement, managed by an independent trustee, is designed to restrict Marinakis’s influence over the club. Once set up, he cannot partake in club operations, effectively minimizing conflict of interest allegations. Though the official confirmation of this structure came later than expected, Nottingham Forest believes they met the March 1 deadline.

  • New board members Eleanor Walsh, Henry Hickman, and Janet Gibson were appointed to facilitate compliance.
  • Forest claims to have completed the necessary documentation and submitted it to UEFA on time.

Forest’s Current Situation

Nottingham Forest is on the verge of a significant achievement. They are hopeful of qualifying for the Champions League through the Europa League by defeating Aston Villa in the semi-finals. The match schedule includes:

  • First leg: April 30 (Home)
  • Second leg: May 7 (Away)

Should they win, Forest would face either Freiburg or Braga in the final.

Olympiacos and Marinakis’ Ownership

As a seasoned owner, Marinakis became the president of Olympiacos in 2010 and acquired Nottingham Forest in May 2017. His ownership interests also extend to Portuguese club Rio Ave, which he acquired in late 2023. The dual ownership of Forest and Olympiacos is currently at the forefront due to UEFA regulations.

Last season, Crystal Palace faced challenges due to similar multi-club ownership rules after qualifying for the Europa League. UEFA ultimately relegated them to the Conference League, allowing Nottingham Forest to benefit from their predicament. This history reinforces the importance of strict adherence to UEFA’s guidelines.

As the situation develops, Nottingham Forest remains confident in their compliance with UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules. Their focus is on achieving success in both domestic and European competitions.
