Draisaitl Expected Back for Oilers’ Game 1 Against Ducks in West Round One

Leon Draisaitl is set to return for the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1 against the Anaheim Ducks in the Western Conference Round One. His anticipated comeback comes after a brief absence due to an injury sustained earlier this season.
Draisaitl’s Injury and Recent Performance
Draisaitl, aged 30, was performing exceptionally well this season, ranking fourth in NHL scoring with 97 points. His impressive tally included 35 goals and 62 assists over 65 games. Unfortunately, he was injured following a hit into the boards by Predators forward Ozzy Wiesblatt.
Initially, Draisaitl returned for two shifts but had to sit out the remainder of that game. Subsequently, the Oilers confirmed that he would miss the rest of the regular season. Fortunately, he has recently resumed practice, skating on the second line alongside Vasily Podkolzin and Kasperi Kapanen, while also returning to his role on the top power-play unit.
Edmonton’s Playoff Aspirations
The Oilers are aiming for another deep playoff run this year after consecutive losses in the Stanley Cup Final to the Florida Panthers. They concluded the regular season with a record of 41-30-11, securing second place in the Pacific Division, just one point ahead of the third-place Ducks.
Draisaitl and captain Connor McDavid were the top scorers in the playoffs last season, each contributing 33 points across 22 games. In total playoff matches dating back to the 2022 season, McDavid has amassed 128 points while Draisaitl has accumulated 114 points.
Team Dynamics and Recovery
McDavid spoke positively about Draisaitl’s return, commenting on the impact of missing key players. He emphasized Draisaitl’s resilience and ability to elevate his game during playoffs. In previous seasons, he has played through injuries, including a high-ankle sprain in 2022 and an upper-body injury during the 2024 finals.
Draisaitl acknowledges the challenges of returning after an injury. He stated, “It’s going to take a little bit of time for me to really be myself.” He understands the need to balance personal performance with team needs during the playoffs.
Looking Ahead
Draisaitl expressed excitement for the playoffs, emphasizing the unique atmosphere and intensity of this time of year. As he prepares for his return, his focus remains on quickly finding ways to contribute to the team’s success.
