Survey Reveals French Prefer 47-Year-Old as Ideal President

As the French presidential election approaches in April 2024, anticipation is building among voters and political figures alike. Recent polling conducted by Elabe for La Tribune Dimanche has unraveled the French people’s preferences for their ideal leader, revealing interesting insights into voters’ desires and expectations.

Survey Highlights: French Preferences for Their Ideal President

One of the survey’s significant findings indicates that 51% of respondents believe a political leader has the best qualifications to be President. This number marks an increase of eight points from a similar survey conducted in February 2020. Bernard Sananès, president of Elabe, noted that public dissatisfaction with politics does not diminish the perceived value of a political background.

Age Preferences for Leadership

The survey also uncovered that the ideal age for the next president is 47 years. This is notable considering Emmanuel Macron was elected as the youngest president at 39. When asked about age distribution preferences, the results were as follows:

  • 8% prefer a president under 35 years old
  • 22% would like one between 35 and 44
  • 49% favor candidates aged 45 to 54
  • 17% prefer those aged 55 to 64
  • 3% would support a candidate over 65

Qualities Desired in a President

When asked about essential qualities for the next president, honesty emerged as the most valued trait, with 76% of respondents identifying it as crucial. Other important traits included:

  • Proximity and listening skills: 55%
  • Courage: 48%
  • Authority: 34%
  • Vision: 30%
  • Charisma: 25%

Political Alignments and Priorities

Voter preferences for political alignment are varied. According to the survey:

  • 28% prefer a right-leaning president
  • 19% desire a left-leaning leader
  • 16% would support a centrist

In terms of policy priorities, 44% of respondents want the next president to focus on purchasing power, followed by:

  • Security: 31%
  • Health: 30%
  • Public debt and immigration: 28%
  • Education: 21%

Public Expectations and Political Landscape

As the election nears, 57% of the surveyed population expects their future president to prioritize unity and social stability, even at the expense of immediate reforms. Conversely, 42% seek deep, potentially divisive reforms.

This reflects a cautious public attitude toward political reform, perceived negatively due to previous experiences. Sananès emphasized that future political candidates must demonstrate that reform can coexist with societal harmony.

With one year left until the election, 45% of those surveyed report finding a candidate that resonates with them from the current array of political figures. Notably, support is strongest among backers of La France Insoumise and the National Rally, demonstrating a clear divide in voter satisfaction across different political factions.
