Stevens Confident Ahead of Crucible Return Despite Lack of Practice

Matthew Stevens is set to compete in snooker’s premier event, the World Snooker Championship, despite limited practice. The 48-year-old Welsh player managed to secure his place at the Crucible by defeating former champion Stuart Bingham 10-7 in the qualifying rounds.
Stevens’ Relationship with the Crucible
Stevens has mixed feelings about the Crucible. He carries memories of past defeats in the finals of 2000 and 2005, but he has also celebrated numerous victories there. “I’ve had so many good wins there,” Stevens remarked. He has participated in the one-table setup six times, and while he appreciates those experiences, he admits to having some regrets about certain outcomes.
Looking Ahead to the Championship
As the tournament approaches, Stevens expressed a desire to avoid facing both seasoned veterans like Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Williams and rising stars such as Zhao Xintong. “I’d rather play the Class of ’62. I don’t want to play Xintong on Saturday morning. I want to be in the tournament longer than that,” he stated, acknowledging the competitive field he faces.
Despite his lack of recent practice, Stevens remains optimistic about his performance potential. “I can still play decent now and again,” he said. He has a track record of performing well in the World Championship, suggesting there’s something about the event that enhances his game. Stevens noted that he hasn’t played much snooker over the past six months, but he believes he still has what it takes to compete at a high level.
