Prince George Cougars Penalized $1,500 for Disruptive Crowd Throwing Beer on Ice

The Prince George Cougars faced a $1,500 penalty due to inadequate security measures during a wild playoff game. The incident took place on Wednesday night at the CN Centre during the Cougars’ match against the Penticton Vees.

Chaos at the Playoff Game

Frustrations mounted among fans as displeasure with referee decisions escalated. During the game, spectators began throwing beer cans and other objects onto the ice, while chants of “refs, you suck” filled the arena. This disturbance led to a physical altercation in the stands, as one fan urged others to stop throwing items.

Consequences of Disruptive Crowd Behavior

  • The Cougars received a two-minute penalty due to the unruly actions of the crowd.
  • This was not the only penalty the Cougars faced, contributing to the growing frustration in the arena.
  • Cougars forward Aiden Foster was suspended for two games due to an illegal hit during the match.

Sports reporter Ted Clarke, from the Prince George Citizen, remarked on the unprecedented atmosphere that evening. He expressed disappointment, saying, “It’s just a few people who ruin it for everyone.” Clarke also suggested that the WHL should consider adopting video review policies to reduce similar disputes, a practice already in place in the NHL and BCHL.

Controversial Penalty Calls

A significant turning point in the game was a five-minute penalty and game misconduct issued to Cougars defenceman Corbin Vaughan for an alleged head check. However, video evidence suggested it was merely a legal body check. The WHL later confirmed there would be no further disciplinary action against Vaughan.

Series Status

The intense game resulted in a tie for the series, with both teams now level at 2-2 in the best-of-seven playoff contest. The next match, Game 5, will take place in Penticton, followed by Game 6 back in Prince George.
