Charlie Cox of Daredevil Fame Attempts Popular J’RPG: “I Struggled”

Charlie Cox, the actor renowned for his role in Daredevil, recently shared insights about his experience with the popular game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. In an interview with GamesRadar+ prior to the 2026 BAFTA Games Awards, he discussed his journey in the game, revealing that while he has started playing, he has not yet completed it.
Charlie Cox’s Gaming Experience with Clair Obscur
Cox expressed enthusiasm for Clair Obscur, stating, “I’ve since played a bit of it.” However, he noted that completing the game is a considerable challenge, especially given the game’s extensive gameplay time, which can reach up to 100 hours. He described his progress as modest, admitting, “I haven’t completed it” and that he only played “the opening bit for a while.”
The Challenge of Completion
- The game requires a significant investment in time.
- Completion can take over 50 hours, with some players exceeding 100 hours.
- Cox found the process challenging, stating, “I’m not very good” at the game.
Interestingly, Cox’s gaming history has mostly revolved around classic games like FIFA 98, Mario Kart, and Goldeneye 007. He highlighted that these earlier games were very different from Clair Obscur in terms of storytelling.
Evolution of Video Game Storytelling
Cox acknowledged the depth of the narrative in Clair Obscur. He remarked on how modern games like this one offer rich stories that unfold as players progress, contrasting them with older games that lacked intricate storylines. “Those games weren’t, like, stories that were so carefully carved out,” he noted, emphasizing the engaging storytelling that players now experience.
Personal Connection to the Game
When discussing his role within Clair Obscur, Cox mentioned, “It didn’t really feel like me… I thought of it as Gustave,” indicating a strong connection to his character rather than his own identity.
Upcoming BAFTA Games Awards
The excitement around Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 coincides with the upcoming 2026 BAFTA Games Awards, scheduled for April 17, 2026, at the Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. With anticipation building around the event, titles like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur are expected to be prominent contenders, even as Cox hopes the game will “live in people’s memory.”
