The basketball community is mourning the loss of Oscar Schmidt, an iconic figure in Brazilian and global basketball. He passed away on February 17, 2023, at the age of 68 after being admitted to Santa Ana Municipal Hospital in Santana de Parnaíba, São Paulo.
Oscar Schmidt’s Remarkable Career
Born Oscar Daniel Bezerra Schmidt on February 16, 1958, in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Schmidt began his professional journey with the Cristal club in Brasília. He later played for various esteemed teams in Brazil, including:
- Sírio
- Palmeiras
- Mackenzie
- Corinthians
- Flamengo
His international career included stints with Italian club Juvecaserta and Spain’s Fórum Valladolid. Despite being drafted by the New Jersey Nets for the NBA in 1984, Schmidt declined the opportunity. At that time, NBA players were not eligible to compete for their national teams.
Achievements and Legacy
Schmidt is celebrated for leading Brazil to victory in the 1987 Pan American Games, where his team triumphed over the United States with a score of 120–115 in the final. His accomplishments with the Brazilian National Basketball Team include:
- Bronze medal at the 1987 World Championship
- Three gold medals in the South American Championships (1977, 1983, 1985)
With an astonishing 49,973 career points, he was regarded as the highest scorer in basketball until 2024 when LeBron James surpassed him. Schmidt’s contributions to the sport were recognized globally when he was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame on August 20, 2010, along with being honored in the Basketball Halls of Fame in the United States and Italy.
