Prior to his tenure at Paul Quinn, Hammett made a lasting impact at Penn State Wilkes-Barre. During his nine seasons there, he became the all-time winningest coach, achieving an impressive 201 victories.

Hammett was hired by Paul Quinn College in April 2025. However, his time with the team was marked by challenges. The team finished the season with a 9-17 record, including a 4-8 status in the HBCU Athletic Conference.

In 2025, the addition of both institutions was celebrated by HBCUAC Commissioner Kiki Baker Barnes. She noted:
“We are thrilled to welcome Huston-Tillotson University and Paul Quinn College to the HBCU Athletic Conference. Both institutions bring a rich tradition of athletic and academic excellence.”
Michael Sorrell, president of Paul Quinn College, expressed excitement about the new conference affiliation. He stated:
“The Quinnite Nation is tremendously excited about joining the HBCUAC. This opportunity will elevate our athletic programs on a national level and enhance competition for our student-athletes.”
