Steve McNamara Named Hull FC Head Coach Starting 2027

Hull FC has officially announced that Steve McNamara will take over as Head Coach starting in 2027, following an agreement with the Warrington Wolves. As part of this arrangement, Hull FC has paid a significant transfer fee for McNamara’s services.
For the 2026 season, McNamara will continue his role as assistant coach at Warrington. Both teams are committed to ensuring a seamless transition once the season concludes.
McNamara’s Return to Hull FC
Steve McNamara is not only a celebrated coach but also a former player for Hull FC. He began his career with the club, progressing through the youth ranks to make over 160 senior appearances between 1989 and 1996. His playing experience includes international representation with England and Great Britain.
A Distinguished Coaching Career
Throughout his two-decade-long coaching career, McNamara has gained significant respect in British rugby league. His coaching stints include:
- Bradford Bulls
- Catalans Dragons
- England national team
- NRL Assistant Coach for Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors
At Catalans Dragons, McNamara achieved historic success, leading the team to its most successful period, which featured:
- A Challenge Cup Final victory
- A League Leaders Shield win
- Two Super League Grand Final appearances
Changes at Hull FC
In addition to McNamara’s appointment, Hull FC also announced that John Cartwright has stepped down from his role as Head Coach. While he will no longer manage day-to-day operations, he remains with the club. Assistant Coach Andy Last will fill the role of interim Head Coach for the remainder of the 2026 Betfred Super League season.
